According to Diodorus Siculus, when Sisygambis, the mother of Darius III, mistook Hephaestion for Alexander, Alexander reassured her with the words: “For actually he too is Alexander.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt Troy, Alexander honoured the tomb of Achilles, while Hephaestion honoured that of Patroclus. Centuries later, the ancient writer Aelian interpreted this gesture as a reflection of the bond between the two pairs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese stories inspired the title My Second Self, an exploration of a connection so profound that another person can come to feel like an extension of oneself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn contrast to my paintings of Achilles and Patroclus, set against darker backgrounds, I chose light tones and a sense of clarity for this piece.
